I am not a HAM, but once was an active SWL'r using various radios.

When I was about 12 (in 1964, and in later years, I tuned my wooden cabinet, Zenith All Band Radio (0.3-30 MHz, do they use more?)in a darkened room with the vaccuum tubes glowing. I seem to recall a 12Y3 Rectifier was particularly impressive. (maybe it was a 5Y3)

After listening to the BBC and sneaking to listen to Radio Moscow I tuned to 80 meters, or maybe the high band on 40 meters. My antenna was the wrap around the room connect to the mattress boxspring variety. Today we recognize this variation of the discone as "BOBS WARCM".
